Length and Lie

True Length Technology™ considers the length and lie relationship to be the single most important factor in a properly fit set of clubs.

If your hands are in the proper address position with:

  • proper knee bend
  • proper spine tilt
  • correct hand position
  • consistent address

Then the individual has vastly improved their chances of solid ball contact.

Solid ball contact is the primary factor in a well executed shot.

True Length Technology™ is a primary factor in setting the golfer to the correct address position.

With a set of clubs properly fit to a consistent address or hand position then improved playability becomes an immediate result.  I've discussed before that the length increments between 'True Length Technology™' clubs is less than the traditional 1/2" and on a non linear scale. No two clubs are cut to the same incrumentation.

The math model is designed to keep your favourite address and hand position for each club.  Once the proper hand position is established for the individual then the math model determines the length of every club in your set based on the lie angle of each individual club.

Some club head designers have 1/2 degree of lie angle change, some have 1 degree of lie angle change, and some are in between these parameters.  Yet the most puzzling fact is that they all build in 1/2 inch length increments.  These lengths are not mathematically correct.  The only way to have a proper lie angle is to have the length set correctly - which is less than 1/2 inch per club based on a 1 degree lie angle change.

True length Technology™ determines this proper hand position.

The math model determines the proper length from your 3 down to your wedges.

All lengths are based on the individual lie angles of each individual club head.

The end result is your favourite hand and address positions get to repeat - shot after shot.

Loft and Lie

Proper directional control is a direct function of lie angle.  If the toe is up on any club then the ball flight will have 'back spin' and some 'side spin'.   The more the toe is up - the greater the amount of side spin and the further off target your ball will be.  Ralph Maltby once described to me that a pitching wedge from 100 yards (with 1 degree of lie angle deviation) will result in a miss of the intended target by 22 feet.

Lie angle becomes less important as the loft decreases, but my personal preference to be at the target every time.  If you need to compensate by adjusting your aim, then that shot just became much more difficult as you now have to estimate the effect of the resultant side spin.  This is not something I want to do on any shot.

Dan's Custom Golf Shop has the ability to set these loft and lie angles correctly to each individual.  A forged club head can be adjusted to a greater degree than a cast head so there are metallurgical properties that limit the amount of adjustment that can be made on some club heads.  Not all heads can be bent!

Retrofit your existing set to True Length Technology

Length, loft, lie and swing weight will all have to be measured to obtain your current set of specifications.  Proper wrist to floor and adjusted wrist to floor measurements will need to be established.  From here a recommended math model can be determined and recommended changes will be suggested. There are limitations to all clubheads for loft and lie adjustments plus length limitations.

Dan's Custom Golf Shop will do all we can to help correct your set to the 'True Length Technology™' math model. In most cases we can adjust your lofts and lies but in those cases where the club head cannot be adjusted due to metallurgical restrictions, the set still can still be improved for playability by correctly setting the length based on your current clubs specifications.

Please note that there are specifications that will change in your set.  If the length is extended then the swing weight will go up, if shortened the swing, weight will go down.  Head weight can be added to a shortened club, but mass cannot be removed from a lengthened club (unless a weighted tip pin has been used).  Disassemble will be required to remove this added mass if the resultant heavier swing weight is not desired.

Dan's Custom Golf Shop has the experience and expertise to optimise your existing set to the best of our abilities. The improvements in you game will come naturally due to the fact that your clubs now fit you better than ever.

Dan
